Security review for vital institutions

Security at vital national institutions will be reviewed periodically to ensure a high standard of security at all times, the Government said yesterday.

Among the vital institutions coming under this security plan are the Ceylon Electricity Board, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Ratmalana and Katunayake (Bandaranaike International) airports, Colombo Port, the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Defence Secretary Cyril Herath told the Daily News.

Herath stressed that there is no information on any threats to these organisations and installations at the moment. "These security measures will not inconvenience the public.

"There will be no road closures, checkpoints or barriers. It will be an exercise confined to these institutions only," Herath added.

This decision was reached at a top-level meeting yesterday at the Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order, presided by Public Security, Law and Order and Deputy Defence Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake.

The three service commanders, the IGP, Chairmen/chief executive officers of vital institutions and their security managers attended the meeting.

"They discussed the exiting security arrangements. It was a routine assessment. They decided to meet at least once every three months for a review," Herath said. The security chiefs outlined their existing security arrangements.

It was decided that a team of experts from the Armed Forces would visit each of these institutions for evaluating the existing security measures and recommending remedial action for any shortcomings. Once enacted, such measures will be continued with further refinements where necessary.

Meanwhile, a special Police Motorcycle Unit was launched yesterday by Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath to bolster security and help eradicate violence in Colombo.

The Special Police Motorcycle Unit will be under City Traffic ASP Anton Sirikumara. They will be on call round the clock, Colombo DIG Herath said.

Police personnel attached to this special Motorcycle Unit had undergone a special training in combating crimes and apprehending culprits attempting to escape after committing crimes, the Colombo DIG said. The special unit is armed with sophisticated weapons, he added.

Any citizen living in Colombo could contact this Unit by calling the Police Emergency Unit on 2433333 - 2433334 - 2421988 - 2422521 or 2446736. "This unit will take prompt action on all information," the Colombo DIG said.

All information will be treated as highly confidential, DIG Herath added. In addition to the Motorcycle Unit, the Colombo DIG has set up a foot patrol unit in order to detect criminal activities in the Colombo Division.

Colombo Traffic Division Director Senior SP Y.G.R.M. Lafir, Colombo Central Senior SP Lucky Dissanayake, Colombo North SSP H.S. Dayananda, Colombo Central ASP Premalal Ranagala and several officers attached to the Colombo Traffic Division also participated.
