24 teams for Isipathana International Rugby Sevens Twelve leading rugby playing schools from Sri Lanka and twelve foreign teams will take part in the Isipathana International Rugby Sevens which will be worked off on August 21 and 22, 2004 at CR and FC grounds, Longden Place. Singer (Sri Lanka) is the main sponsor with SriLankan Airlines as the official carrier. The twelve schools from Sri Lanka which are taking part in the tournament are Ananda, St. Peter's, Wesley, Southern Province combined team, Sabaragamuwa Province combined team, Kingswood, S. Thomas, St. Sylvester's, St. Anthony's, Thurstan, Royal and Isipatana. Eleven foreign teams have confirmed their participation. Haberdasher's Aske's Boys school, Thanet Wanderers, Sky Runners, Hab's, London Sutton and Epsom RFC (all from England), Mentone Grammer school (from Australia), Nawaka District School (Fiji), Tamil Nadu RU (India), Roi Et School (Thailand), Doha RFC (Qatar) and Brunei RFC while the 12th team will be picked from either Russia, Hong Kong, New Zealand or Singapore. This year's tournament will be conducted on a grand scale with IRB representative for Asian Region Jamie Scott and IRB Regional Manager Jarrad Gallagher too being present as observers. The Marketing Director of Singer (Sri Lanka) Asitha Abeysekera speaking at a press briefing at the Colombo Plaza Hotel said that Singer (Sri Lanka) is delighted to be associated with the Isipathana International Rugby Sevens which is going to be a tremendous success. The organising committee is very efficient and hoped they will form a sports marketing company. The Isipathana International Rugby Sevens will come upto the standard of Hong Kong and Dubai Rugby Sevens in five years time and singer will be there as the main sponsor as long as the tournament is conducted. The Promotions Executive of Sri Lankan Airlines Mrs. Hyacinth Silva said that Sri Lankan Airlines is proud to be the co-sponsor of the Isipathana International Rugby Sevens for the second time. Free Air Tickets will be provided by SriLankan Airlines to IRB officials Jamie Scott and Jarrad Gallagher. Participating teams will be flown in by SriLankan Airlines from the destinations that they fly to. The SriLankan Airlines have decided to include the Isipathana Sevens in their annual sports calendar. International Referees from Thailand, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Dubai and Singapore will officiate in the tournament along with the leading referees in Sri Lanka. (R.S.) |
