Layton Cup Boxing Championships: 

Soldier Jayantha Kumara named best Boxer

Soldier H. Jayantha Kumara was named best boxer while Airman A. S. I. Karunatilleke was picked as the best loser at the Layton Cup boxing meet organised by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and concluded at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium in Kotahena yesterday.

Kumara put up a splendid performance and won the fly weight under 51 kg title overcoming K. M. Sugathadasa of Unichella in a close contest Karunatilleke too gave a good account of himself before going down to K. P. Kandanarachchi of Sri Lanka Navy in the welter weight under 64 kg final.

Meanwhile in the super heavy weight under 91 kg category class event D. P. Dharmasiri of Sri Lanka Navy defeated M. I. Hanza of Sri Lanka Air Force easily on points 25-13.

In the heavy weight under 91 kg category class event A. Anurasiri of Sri Lanka Army beat A. M. S. Bandara of Sri Lanka Air Force on points 42-33.

In the light heavy weight under 81 kg category class event H. M. Wanninayake of Sri Lanka Army outclassed his teammate M. J. Meewela with the referee deciding to stop the contest in round three.

In the middle weight under 75 kg category class event R. T. Jayatilleke of Sri Lanka Army had the better of his teammate D. R. Fernando.

In the welter weight under 64 kg category class event K. P. Kandanarachchi of Sri Lanka Navy had the better of A. W. S. Karunatilleke of Sri Lanka Air Force. In the light welter weight under 60 kg category class event R. M. U. Bandara of Slimline edged out A. K. Jayasundera of Sri Lanka Navy on points in a close contest 16-14. In the feather weight under 57 category class event A. G. Chameera of Slimline put up a fine performance to beat K. M. Bandara of Sri Lanka Navy. Another boxer from Slimline M. D. Wanniarachchi took the bantam weight under 64 kg title with an easy win over D. M. Samarasekera of Sri Lanka Army.

In the fly weight under 51 kg category class event H. J. Kumara of Sri Lanka Army beat K. M. Sugathadasa of Unichella on points. In addition K. C. Alexander of Unichella won the light fly weight under 48 kg title overcoming T. D. Samaranayake of Sri Lanka Army in the final.
