Murali has no hatred towards Aussies

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Sri Lankan leg-spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan yesterday said that he would not change his mind on boycotting next month's cricket tour of Australia, but added he has no hatred towards the Australians.

"I have no hatred towards anyone," Murali told a packed press conference held at the Hotel Galadari to announce his joining the United Nation's World Food Program (WFP) in it's fight against poverty and hunger.

Responding to a question, Murali noted that he has no hatred towards the Australian people but said he would not change his mind to tour in Australia in the coming season.

Referring to certain criticism in Australia, Murali said it was easy for them to say anything. "They have achieved everything easily. Cricketers can say anything. But whatever I have achieved today was through great difficulties. Only I know what I have gone through."

Explaining a question raised by a local journalist that he had refused to give interviews or photo opportunities for local media, Murali said he was following instructions from the Cricket Board and that journalists should take it up with the authorities.

Murali also stressed that peace is necessary for the country. "People want to live in a peaceful atmosphere."

He said there is no differences in the cricket team his being a Tamil. "We all are playing for the country. I think people should forget the past - we must forget the past and put away differences and move together."
