Plantation workers must support President - Unionist

"The plantation workers should strengthen the hands of the President in her efforts she is making in carrying through the peace process with the LTTE.

At the same time we appeal to the President to ignore the opposition of people who come out with communal cries to achieve their selfish political motive", General Secretary of the Lanka Estate Workers Union and CC member of the LSSP S. Ramanathan said.

He was speaking at a Union meeting of the Estate Committee Leaders, Youth Leaders and Women Committee Leaders of Matale District held recently.

This meeting presided over by Vice President of the LEWU M. Selladurai was convened to support the candidates contesting the forthcoming Provincial Council elections in the Matale District.

Ratnanathan addressing this meeting stated that the UNF Government of the past was showing the world that they were interested in solving the ethnic problems of the Tamil people and the Tamil people fully trusted them but finally it was proved that the UNF Government was not genuinely handling the peace process.

The LTTE had withdrawn from the peace talks having realised that the UNF Government was also cheating the Tamil people.

Now the President has commenced talks with the LTTE in-order to find a lasting solution to this problem. But the UNF from the opposition was trying its various tactics in sabotaging the efforts made by the President.

If this problem is not solved by the President now this will never be solved by any one in the future and this would lead to disaster for this country, he said.

Ramanathan stated that although the plantation workers were duped to vote for the UNP throughout it was a historical fact that the plantation workers enjoyed all their rights and benefits only under SLFP/LSSP/CP led Governments.

It was President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who created a separate Infrastructure Ministry for the plantation sector and allocated through this Ministry million of Rupees for the uplift of the plantation workers" Ramanathan said.

Samurdhi Deputy Minister Rohana Dissanayake, Bandula Yalegama and several others also spoke at this meeting.
