by Uditha Kumarasinghe Agriculture and Livestock Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed a special committee to look into the quality of Highland milk powder produced by MILCO Private Ltd which comes under the Ministry's purview. The Minister has taken these measures to increase the quality of local milk powder produced by the MILCO and encourage the consumption of Highland milk among consumers, a ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. Minister Dissanayake has directed the Ministry Secretary to hand over the committee report to him within two weeks. A three member committee appointed by Ministry Secretary Tissa Warnasuriya comprises Acting Director of Sri Lanka Bureau of Standard S.L. Ginige, Assistant Director of Food Inspection R.A.D. Rupasinghe and Dr. U.S. Bandara. The Ministry has made arrangements to increase the local milk production. The production of quality milk powders would enable MILCO to compete with imported milk powders and provide high quality milk powder to the people. Increase in the local milk production would directly facilitate to increase country's national production, he said. Meanwhile the Ministry is exploring the possibility of developing a mechanism of distributing fresh milk to the people to their door step in a more systematic manner. |
