India will assist Sri Lanka's program of setting up cultural centres throughout the country by donating musical equipment such as Sitars, Tablas and Serphinas. It will also assist Sri Lanka in the archaeological field by providing modern tools and technology applicable for archaeological excavation and conservation work. Nirupam Sen, the Indian High Commissioner nominated as the new United Nation's representative gave this assurance when he called on Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath for discussions at his ministry recently. A press release issued by the Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Ministry said the discussions also centred around the possibility of granting more Indian scholarships for the cultural sector, launching of a joint program for reviving the Sri Lanka cinema from the present doldrums and relaxing laws inhibiting the import of literary books. The Minister said Sri Lanka welcomes Indian scholarships for aesthetics subjects specially scholarships to study cinema at the University of Poona. Herath said the Indian cinema had so far made a negative impact on the Sri Lankan cinema and as such, setting up a joint structure to share the technological developments and other experiences of the Indian cinema with Sri Lankan cinema artistes was vital. As regards the literary sector, Sri Lanka would welcome the relaxing of restrictions imposed on the import of works by Sri Lankan Tamil authors to India, the Minister said. High Commissioner Sen who approved the importance of these suggestions, promised to bring them to the notice of the Indian government for a favourable response. |
