Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has left for Moscow on an official visit at the invitation of Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergey Lavroc. Lavrov is a career diplomat whose first posting was in Sri Lanka in 1972 where he learnt Sinhala. He was the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations from 1994 to 2004 when Kadirgamar was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2001. Lavroc was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in March 2004. The two Ministers will engage in wide ranging discussions on a variety of matters including relations between the two countries in the political, economic and cultural fields and on international issues such as the Nuclear Convention on Terrorism proposed by Russia, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Regional Cooperation in South Asia, the activities of the Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) grouping and the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IORARC), the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). The practice of regular consultations between the two Ministries was commenced in 2000. The Minister will be accompanied by Tea Board Chairman, Niraj de Mel to discuss questions relating to the tea market with the Russian authorities and tea importers since Russia is the largest buyer of Sri Lankan tea. The Minister is expected to meet the Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation to discuss matters relating to bilateral trade. |
