Host Malaysia beat Maldives in a thriller N. U. Abdul Razzak reporting from Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, Monday, The 5th Asian Cricket Council Trophy Tournament got under way in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia last Saturday. Fifteen countries from Asia vie for honours and entry in to the I.C.C. tournament which will select the cream for the world cup to be staged in the West Indies in 2007.The champions and the runners-up qualify to participate in the I.C.C. tournament to be held next year. Fifteen contries including seven Middle Eastern counries which are divided into four groups are in the fray in this Asian Cricket show staged among the non test playing nations.The matches are held at different venues close to the capital Kuala Lumpur. The final will be held on 22nd June 2004. On the opening day the hosts Malaysia grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat as the Maldivians displayed a gallant performance in their match. However their tailenders failed to capitalize on the fine partnership of 107 made for the 3rd wicket between captain Moosa Kaleem and Ismail Nihad. Maldives were again in danger losing seven wickets for 124 runs Afzal Faiz, son of former Trinitian Faiz Samad,a Cricket Development Officer attached to the C.C.B. of Maldives rose to the occasion cracking a quick fire 43 inclusive of two towering sixes and five fours. But lady lack was not with Maldives as the tail gave in meekly without getting the required 22 runs to win this match. Thus Malaysia came back to the game registering a nail biting win to take the lead in their group. In the second match, the U.A.E. beat Singapore which is coached by Sri Lanka's Bendon Kuruppu. Their opener Arshad Ali had the honour of making the first century of this tournament. Singapore chasing the target of 250 were sho out for 67 while Bahrain and Nepal had wins over Hong Kong and Bhutan respectively. On the second day four matches were worked off. Kuwait, Bhutan, Oman and Qatar got three points each as they beat their rivals the K.S.A., Afganistan, Iran and Thailand. Afganistan who are the newcomers made 202 with their opener Nowros Khan stealing the lime light with a splendid 101. But Oman had the last laugh as they reached the target losing 6 wickets. |
