Straw calls on President

British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Jack Straw called on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Tuesday and discussed matters of mutual interest to the two countries. Here the President greets Foreign Secretary Straw.

Derailed carriages of the Matsygandha Express lie scattered in Amboli, some 190 km south of Bombay, yesterday. At least 20 people were killed and more than 100 injured when the train bound for India’s commercial hub Bombay derailed early yesterday while crossing a bridge, railway officials said.

Lands Minister orders full probe into GL's alleged land grab

Agriculture and Lands Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday told the Daily News that he had ordered a full-scale inquiry into an alleged illegal land transaction by former minister Prof. G.L. Peiris where he had acquired a 27 acre estate owned by the Land Reform Commission at Maththegoda for just Rs.164,500.

US$ 230 m ADB aid for development
