Singer to sponsor schools rugby Singer (Sri Lanka) has come forward to sponsor schools rugby on a grand scale this year. It will be sponsoring the under 19 schools League Rugby Tournament and the Schools Rugby Sevens. In addition 15 rugby playing schools will be sponsored by the firm while continuing to sponsor the Bradby Shield match between Royal and Trinity for the 10th consecutive year. The Marketing Director of Singer (Sri Lanka) Asitha Abeyesekera speaking at a press briefing at the St. Joseph's College Sports Complex on Tuesday said that Singer (Sri Lanka) was the sponsor of the Sri Lanka Cricket Team when it won the World Cup in 1996. This year in a bid to improve the standard of schools rugby singer (Sri Lanka) will be sponsoring the under 19 schools League Rugby Tournament and the Rugby Sevens. 15 leading schools - St Anthony's, Kandy, Ananda, St. Aloysius Galle, Dharmaraja, Kandy, Isipatana, St. Joseph's, Nalanda, St. Peter's. Richmond, Galle, Royal, Thurstan, S. Thomas', Trinity, Vidyartha and Wesley will also be sponsored by Singer. He also said that his firm will be also sponsoring the Isipatana International Rugby Sevens where the leading Sri lanka schools and foreign schools teams will be taking part. Abeysekera also said that Singer (Sri Lanka) will also continue to sponsor the prestigious Bradby Shield match for the 10th consecutive year. He also said that his firm will be sponsoring the kings of club rugby Kandy Sports Club for the fourth successive year in addition to the Singer-Sri Lankan Airlines International Sevens in Kandy which is being sponsored for the sixth consecutive year. In conclusion Abeysekera said that he was happy that the tournament has now become an IRB World Cup qualifying Tournament. The Chairman of Singer (Sri Lanka) Hemaka Amarasuriya said that sponsorship will help to improve the standard of schools rugby. He was happy to see large crowds coming for rugby matches despite live coverage on television. Although Sri Lanka's rugby Standard has declined he hoped that it would once again reach a high standard in the near future. (R.S.) |
