Treasure hunters arrested in Matale

The Crime Branch of the Matale police arrested a Buddhist priest and a man from Pannipitiya area suspected to be involved in the robbery of treasures by breaking three statues of deities in the historical Aloka Viharaya of Aluvihare, Matale, recently.

According to Matale police, four others including the principal suspect who is a renowned businessman of Kurunegala, who are responsible for this treasure hunt are yet absconding.

Police investigations revealed that the other suspects are residents of Chilaw and Nattandiya and these treasure hunters have taken shelter in the Polwatta Raja Maha Viharaya, in the Mahawela police area to discuss the plan of robbery and that they are responsible for a series of robberies committed in Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Hemmathagama. It is alleged that the luxury vehicle used to commit this robbery is a vehicle belonging to a businessman in Kurunegala. The arrested suspects were due to be produced before the Matale Magistrate.

On the instructions of SSP N.R.S.Ranasinghe and ASP M.B.Angunawala, a police team under IP U.B.Wijekone of Matale Police are conducting investigations.
