BIDTI felicitates founder

A ceremony to launch a Felicitation volume of Essays in honour of Dr. Vernon L.B. Mendis will be held on June 18 at the Sri Lanka Institute of International Relations.

This event is being organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in association with the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI) in which Dr. Mendis is the Director General.

This Felicitation Volume contains over 20 essays on various aspects of the career and achievements of Dr. Mendis written by his friends, colleagues and associates. The latter represent a wide range of eminent scholars, diplomats, public servants all of whom have been associated with Dr. Mendis during his career.

This specific volume is intended to be a tribute to him in recognition of his achievements and contributions. His career has been a combination of skills and achievements. They include his position as the first Career Officer to be appointed to the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, a range of posts in diplomatic positions culminating in several Heads of Missionship such as those of High Commissioner of Canada, High Commissioner of UK, Ambassador of France and Regional Director for UNESCO to Egypt.

He was also the Secretary General of the Colombo Non Aligned Summit of 1976 which was the Fifth such Summit. He served in the highest capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was closely associated with the achievements of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

He is also well known and recognised for his scholarship and literary skills. He has over 10 published works covering a wide range of subjects such as Sri Lankan History, Asian Affairs International Organisations, Non Alignment and SAARC. His latest work is entitled The Rulers of Sri Lanka and is unique as a survey of the personalities and achievements of the monarchs who ruled over Sri Lanka when it was an independent sovereign State.

The felicitation volume has been prepared by the BIDTI staff in honour of Dr. Mendis and contains articles by scholars like Dr. P.R. Anthonis, Dr. Herbert Aponso, Dr. Lester James Peries, Jayantha Dhanapala, Bishop Swithin Fernando and Ray Forbes. It contains many monographs useful for students and those interested in Sri Lanka's post independence foreign policy.

The ceremony will include addresses by personalities who include Dr. Peries, Jayantha Dhanapala and Gen. Dennis Perera.
