Alleged roofing sheet scam : Former UNP MP further remanded by Sarath Malalasekera Former Colombo district UNP MP Lilantha Perera, remanded in connection with the alleged possession and sale of galvanized roofing sheets valued over Rs.2 million imported from India to be distributed free to 128,000 poor families was yesterday further remanded by Colombo Additional Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya till June 24. The Magistrate refused an application for bail in respect of Perera. Three other suspects, S. Pillai Shanmugam, Mohamed Hussain Faroos Jaufer and R. Gnanasekera, also remanded in connection with the same case were refused bail and further remanded till 24. The other suspect Karuppiah Sivakumar was earlier released on bail. On an application by President's Counsel Daya Perera, senior counsel for Perera, the Magistrate directed the Prison authorities to consider the suspect's health condition and transfer him to a paying ward. Perera is among a number of UNP MPs, and Pradeshiya Sabha Members under investigation for alleged fraud for selling the aluminium roofing sheets to traders. Investigations are directed by Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath and conducted by CCD Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda assisted by ASP Palitha Fernando, Inspector Nuwan Wedasinghe, SI Rajapaksa and CCD officers. President's Counsel Daya Perera with Anuja Premaratne, Anton Senanayaka and K. Ranawake appeared for Perera. S. Kalupahana appeared for the first suspect. |
