Request to address victimised teachers' grievances Representatives of the Politically Victimized (1997) Education Services Union met at the Ministry of Education to handover a request to address the grievances of the teachers who, due to political victimization had not been given the due promotions during the last two years. The Secretary Dr. Tara de Mel explained to the members of the Union that although the Cabinet during 2001 took a decision to re-instate these teachers, that decision had been over-ruled a few months later after the government changed. Therefore, the applicants had field action with the Supreme Court requesting to obtain all dues and the Supreme Court had held with the petitioners. However, subsequently the PSC had not made these appointments, the Ministry of Education said in a press release yesterday. The Attorney General too had expressed his views on this matter. The Secretary explained that due to the complexity of the issue and the decisions made by the authorities mentioned, the President as Education Minister will present the position to Cabinet and take a considered decision prior to directing the Ministry regarding appropriate action. |
