Nepal's new leader sworn in, woos parties

KATHMANDU, Thursday (Reuters)

Nepal's new prime minister was sworn in on Thursday and began wooing key political parties to form a multi-party government in a bid to defuse a political crisis and end a bloody Maoist revolt in the Himalayan kingdom.

Sher Bahadur Deuba, fired by King Gyanendra nearly two years ago, was reappointed on Wednesday as Nepal's 14th prime minister in as many years, replacing royalist Surya Bahadur Thapa who quit last month after weeks of street protests.

Homnath Dahal, a spokesman for Deuba's Nepali Congress (Democratic) party, said the new leader wanted to include the main political parties in his government to better tackle the Maoist revolt, which has killed about 9,500 people since 1996.

"All parties represented in the (dissolved) parliament, the government and the king must form a common front and a single voice to tackle the Maoist problem," Dahal said. "Deuba is trying to do that and bring the Maoists into the political mainstream."

Two key parties, which are leading the protests demanding the restoration of democracy, were guarded in their reaction.

"Deuba must revive the dissolved parliament to get our support," Girija Prasad Koirala, chief of the centrist Nepali Congress party, said after a late night meeting with Deuba.

Deuba was expected to begin forming his cabinet after the swearing in, one party official said.
