Three games down for decision :

Kit Premier Leagues Soccer kicks off today

by Bernard Perera

The Premier League Soccer Championship which was launched on Tuesday with a new brand name starts today with three matches to be played.

The championship which was conducted last year under the brand name Dialog Premier league sponsored by Dialog GSM (MTN Networks) has been changed to Kit Premier League.

At the launch it was mentioned by Chief Executive Officer of Dialog GSM Hans Wijayasuriya that they are highly satisfied with last year's progress.

Last year's tournament has brought good results not only to us as sponsors but also to the sport in general which proved that it has to be continued further for the betterment of the game. As well as for the players and spectators.

Chairman of Management Committee Football Federation of Sri Lanka Manilal Fernando admitted as conductors of the tournament FFSL had to face few problems.

These were smoothly sorted out to complete the tournament on schedule. He also pointed out that although the best teams and best players are involved in this tournament the problems that erupt were due to lack of professionalism.

Previous year's Premier League Champs Negombo Youth SC from Negombo enters the fray today when they confront the strong Army outfit who were among the top ten last year at Army grounds.

Negombo team which has many national players are sure to go flat out to regain the prestige what they failed to maintain during the last championship.

Meanwhile the soldiers too have put out every thing in store to hold the strong opposition at bay with their skills. Army too were among the top ten teams.

The second encounter on the first day will see the debutant from outstation to the kit Premier league Wennappuwa's New Young SC playing York SC from Kandy at Wennapuwa.

The two teams played in the final of Division I at the same venue and booked their places in the Premier League.

With York SC's arrival to the Premier League it was Kandy's Hy-Line SC that had to go down to Division I.

Wennappuwa lads who defeated York SC in their home den in the final will have the advantage here on their own ground specially wit the large number of spectators expected to flock to cheer their soccerites.

The third game on this day is between FA Cup runners Renown SC from Kotahena and Victory SC from Slave Island.

Here Renown SC who faced strong Ratnam SC last week in the final of the Sharp FA Cup are in fine shape and are sure keep their form intact to outsmart Victory SC in this game.

Renown SC led by A. Loganathan has a few national players who have lot of experience behind them playing in many internationals and also playing on foreign soil on many occasions.

Victory SC will have a better understanding among their players to control the goal-hungry Renown strikers.

During past tournament team from Slave Island failed to keep up to expectations.

They were never in front of the table. In the past Slave Island Club was famous for its surprises and victories, but it was never to be seen in the past few years.

Kit Premier League championship is a another chance for them to bring in past glories back to its club house.
