Fowzie gets tough on political interferences by Florence Wickramage Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie said that he would not allow people interested in gaining political mileage to interfere with the development and conservation programmes of his Ministry. Minister Fowzie said this on completion of a field inspection tour of the Upper Watershed Management Project (UWMP) areas of Hulangkapolla at Nuwara Eliya, Dalgolla, Malpanagama, Nelugaha and Palapatana at Welimada and Walapane. Minister Fowzie told the media that he was pleased with the development and community oriented work of the Project and was planning to extend it to other identified areas where such conservation work was needed. Fowzie has given instructions to his officials to identify all the water-springs in the Badulla district for conservation. The UWMP besides gully and soil conservation work have introduced cattle-breeding and bee-keeping as vocations to supplement the community's economic standards in addition to vegetable farming. Representatives of farmer communities in the area assured the Minister that they were now in a position to continue with the work undertaken by the UWMP as advised by its field officers, once the project period concludes. |
