by Florence Wickramage A series of activities will be held in Anuradhapura on June 5 and 6 to commemorate World Environment Day - June 5. Several non-governmental and state institutions have jointly organised the commemorations which will take place at the Ruvanweliseya premises. The theme of the celebrations is 'Biodiversity - Our Heritage'. Environment and Natural Resources Deputy Minister Bandula Basnayake and Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardena will be the Chief Guests. A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Nature Foundation (Sri Lanka Soba Sansadaya) said the commemoration activities will include a Biodiversity Pooja at the Ruwanweliseya, an environmental exhibition, tree planting and an essay and art competition for schoolchildren. The Biodiversity Pooja to be offered at the Ruwanweliseya Chaitya at 8 a.m. on June 5 will include vegetables and fruits grown using carbonic fertiliser and products of food items threatened with extinction. The celebrations at Anuradhapura have been organised with the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry support. |
