by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) has threatened to launch an islandwide strike on June 9 and 10 urging the authorities to resolve their salary anomalies. An alliance spokesman said the authorities had failed to provide solutions to four of their demands. "The authorities had also failed to give us a date to discuss these major issues," HSTUA's spokesman Saman Rathnapriya told the Daily News. Amongst the main demands of the alliance were to provide required funds for the Provincial Councils to resolve the salary anomalies of employees serving at health institutions coming under the Provincial Councils and to increase the salary of the casual employees in parallel with the revised salary rates. He said they have been discussing with the authorities on these issues for the last four months, but failed to reach any settlement. Rathnapriya said despite the strike, a team of staff are kept on duty to attend to intensive care, emergency treatment, paediatric and life saving. The strike will not be held at Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Cancer Hospital, De Zoysa Hospital and Castle Hospital. Meanwhile the Society of Registered and Assistant Medical Officers yesterday threatened to launch a continuous trade union action from June 7 unless the authorities took effective measures to resolve their salary anomalies. The decision was been taken at the society's Central Committee meeting. "Accordingly, all our members numbering 1,550 will join this trade union action", a society spokesman told the Daily News. He said their discussion with the authorities during the last four months had failed to resolve the issue. "We are demanding the health authorities to pay our salaries according to the common circular issued to resolve the salary anomalies in the health sector," the spokesman said. He said their members are facing great difficulties as the Health Secretary had stopped the payment of salaries of only the Registered and Assistant Medical Officers in this revised salary anomaly circular. The spokesman said they have made arrangements to maintain emergency services at every hospital. |
