by Manjula Fernando State universities have proposed to increase their intake for IT degree programs by nearly 50 per cent for the years 2004/2005. Colombo, Kelaniya, Moratuwa and Peradeniya Universities, the institutions producing the highest number of IT graduates in the State sector each year, have informed the University Grants Commission (UGC) that they can increase their intake by 50 per cent provided the Government allocates the funds. The UGC has conveyed this to the Education Ministry which has already taken steps to submit the proposal to the Finance Ministry for approval, an Education Ministry spokesman said. A total of 310 Advanced Level qualified students get the opportunity to follow IT degrees in these four universities with Colombo admitting 120, Kelaniya 50, Moratuwa 100 and Peradeniya 40. If the university proposal is accepted the intake could be increased upto 600, the spokesman said. Colombo and Moratuwa universities have informed that they have the capacity to admit 100 more each, Kelaniya additional 50 and Peradeniya 20 more students for 2004/2005. They are awaiting the green light to go ahead with the plan. |
