The Education Ministry will implement a special program aimed at inculcating values, ethics and civic consciousness into the school system through co-curricular activities and special assignments. Phase one of the program which will be officially launched by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Gampaha on June 10, will cover Grades 6 to 9. The Ministry plans to introduce this special component of value education to other grades during the next two years. This new program includes following components - life competencies, Teacher training, Principals awareness program, Integrating values into other subjects in the Grade 6-9 curricula, promoting value acquisitions through co-curricular activities and special projects/assignment, Promoting social harmony through inter-cultural activities, developing conflict resolution skills, promoting practical activities and religious instructions to strengthen values and awareness through mass media. A special unit at the Education Ministry will monitor its implementation, a ministry spokesman said. |
