None in the region can match Lanka's incentives :

Foreign investors should take advantage of Lanka's strong economic growth - Jeyaraj Fernandopulle

By Shirajiv Sirimane

Sri Lanka has been maintaining strong economic growth and this is one major reason foreign investors should start business in Sri Lanka.

Minister of Trade Commerce and Consumer Affairs Jeyaraj Fernmandopulle who was the chief Guest at the opening of the EU Sri Lanka Partenariat at the BMICH yesterday said that Sri Lanka offers attractive incentives for investors which none of the other countries in the region can match.

He said that the government is also keen on promoting joint business ventures specially for the small and medium sector.

The government would continue with the liberal trade policy which would encourage investors.

He said that the European Union is Sri Lanka's largest trading partner. Exports to the European Union were 30 percent while imports from EU were 60 percent. Sri Lanka's total turnover to the EU has showed an increase in recent years from Rs. 184 billion in 2000 to Rs. 243 billion last year.

He said that the Free Trade Agreement with India is another plus point for Sri Lanka.

Ambassador, Embassy of the Netherlands, Susan Blankhart said that with the peace process the political situation in Sri Lanka has improved. "This is an attraction," the Ambassador said. Sri Lanka offers attractive terms and is the gateway to India.

Charge d' Affaires, Delegation of the European Commission to Sri Lanka, Wouter Wiltonsaid that the EU Sri Lanka Partenariat event would be the ideal opportunity for Sri Lankan businessmen to meet European Union entrepreneurs.

They could find partners, new markets and transfer of technology is also possible.

Nearly 100 foreign companies and 150 Sri Lankan companies are participating in this two-day event. Agro foods, Education Services, Infrastructure, IT and Electronics, Leisure industry and Machinery and Light engineering are the key areas represented at the event.

The event organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Asia - Invest Program is the largest international one to one business matching event to be held in Sri Lanka. Delta Technology is the main sponsor of the event.
