13th Mercedes Benz country golf finals on May 29

by Richard Dwight

For the past 12 years, the Mercedes Benz country finals (local) golf tournament, sponsored by Diesel and Motor Engineering Company (DIMO) has from its inception earned a wide reputation amongst the golfing fraternity here to become exclusive, to be prestigious.

Regarded as a much looked forward to popular event in the golfing calendar of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) - the 13th of which, will take place on Saturday, May 29.

Addressing the media, at a briefing held in connection with the tournament last Tuesday at the RCGC - the captain of the club, Kumar Boralessa was thankful to DIMO for its continued support for the tournament these 13 years.

He recalled that the tournament through the years, derives its popularity from the lavish attractive prizes made available by the sponsors and also the challenging incentive of the winner and runner-up of each category, flying across to Australia to take part in the Asian finals and, the likely prospect of those doing well at the Asian finals, travelling later to take part in the finals to be held in Stuttgart, Germany. (Boralessa reminded those present, that this year's tournament assumes added importance, in that it's being held in the year that the RCGC celebrates its 125th anniversary.

The CEO of DIMO, Ranjith Pandithage, said it's highly probable that DIMO is the oldest Mercedez-Benz dealership in the world, and by staging an event like this, he felt would definitely enhance the Mercedes-Benz fellowship in the country.

Pandithage made the point that the Mercedes-Benz Trophy, is the only golf tournament in the country, which gives international exposure to amateur golfers - whereby it strives to bring the local golfing to world standards.

At this Stableford format golf competition, which commences at 6.45 a.m. on Saturday May 29 at the RCGC there will be around 220 golfers, vying for championship honours. They will be drawn from the clubs of Royal Colombo, Victoria Digana, Nuwara Eliya, Pelwatte, along with a few invitees from the sponsors.

Those competing will play according to their accredited handicaps, in the appropriate handicap group, which are Group 'A' 00-12, Group 'B' 13-20 and Group 'C' 21-24. The attractive prizes on offer will be trophies and mementos, while there will also be additional prizes for nearest to the pin (16th hole) best stableford score - six hidden holes, youngest player, oldest and hole-in-one. the winner of the hole-in-one will be offered a return air ticket to Germany, including a tour of the Mercedes-Benz factory and the museum in Stuttgart.

The winner and runner-up of each of the three groups, will receive return air tickets to participate in the Asian finals to be held in Australia. Those Sri Lankans who qualify will be eligible to take part in the finals to be held in Stuttgard Germany from the 23rd to 29th September.
