Eight athletes picked for Asian junior c'ships

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Sri Lanka has picked an eight-member athletic team for next month's Junior Asian Athletic Championships soon after the completion of 2004 Junior National Championships which concluded last evening.

The most notable of the athletes picked for the Junior Asian Championships in Malaysia is sprinter Manoj Kumara, who emerged as the best athlete in Boys Under-20 age group after his record breaking feat in Boys 400m. He erased the record held by former Peterite and present Sri Lanka Olympic athlete, Ranga Wimalawansa.

Besides the Boys 400m, the other events in which Sri Lanka would take part at the Junior Asian Championships are Girls 100m, Boys 5,000m and Boys 4 x 400m relay. There ave been several other suggestions to field teams or the remaining three relays but the AASL has not taken a decision yet.

Twelve more new meet records were shattered on the final day of the 2004 Sri Lanka Junior National Athletic Championships concluded at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

The three-day meet was conducted by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka and would serve as the final trial to pick the Sri Lanka team for next month's Junior Asian Athletic Championships to be worked off in Malaysia.

Despite the large number of competitors taking part, the meet was a well organised affair. It was conducted under the overall supervision of the AASL President Sunil Jayaweera with AASL Vice President Shemal Fernando of Sri Lanka Navy as the Competition Director.

Sri Lanka junior national athletic championship is one of the key events in local sports calendar. A total of over 4,500 athletes and officials from all over the country took part in over 100 events under six age groups. The events were conducted separately for boys and girls under age groups - under, 12, 14, 16, 18, 23 and 23. The Under-20 finals were considered for selection of the Sri Lanka youth team for the Junior Asian Championships.
