Central Cultural Fund activities to be accelerated

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The Board of Control of the Central Cultural Fund (CCF) has taken several important decisions to accelerate and reshuffle the ongoing activities of the CCF, a Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Ministry spokeswoman said.

She said that a decision was taken to complete all targeted projects in Abhayagiriya Project soon and to finish those projects within the next two and half years. Jethavana project will be completed before Vesak day, 2005. A date will be decided to commence Maha Viharaya project.

The road leading to Mahamevuna Uyana will be repaired by the Department of Highways. All animal slaughter points in the area are to be removed. Mahamevuna Uyana will be placed under the supervision of the Director of Peradeniya Botanical Garden.

A decision was taken to remove illegal settlers before the end of May and to prepare a plan to preserve Lankatillakaya which comes under Alahana Pirivena project. A Board Paper will be prepared to set up a public service centre at Polonnaruwa.

Several decisions were taken to guard against hornet attacks at Sigiriya by providing safety coats and big net cells that can accommodated more than eight persons, putting up warning notices for the use of visitors and to educate the public through the mass media about the special seasons that hornet attacks can take place.

There were also suggestions for a Cabinet Paper to black list the name of the contractor who handles the Sigiriya Water Fountains Project.

A decision was taken to pay special attention to the Tissamaharama excavation project and to set up a museum close to the Weeravila tank. The Dambulla project will also be monitored. Recommendations were made to prepare a cabinet paper to amend the Act related to the Galle Project.

Further recommendations were also made to complete the work at Sithulpavva. Paintings at Mulkirigala, Deeghavapiya and Medamoolana Bodhimalu Rajamaha Viharaya at Weeraketiya will be preserved.

Further recommendations were made to seek the possibility of replacing iron braces of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya with gold plated braces without damaging the Bodhi.
