SCCI stresses need for liberal visa policy for the region The SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has stressed the need for a liberal visa policy for the region. President of the SAARC Chamber, Macky Hashim, said that this proposal was made by Minister of Industries and Production, Pakistan, Ali Jothi. Jothi who made the inaugural address said that the success of the recently concluded 'Made in Pakistan' show was due to the Visa on arrival policy and this should be continued. Already Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal adopt a liberal policy for issuing visas. He also praised the efforts made by SCCI to create awareness particularly among the private sector especially on the SAFTA Treaty and its far-reaching implications on Commerce and Industry and the economy of the South Asian Region. Jatoi expressed his full confidence in the private sector and said that it would be the main driving force in the development of the region. He called upon the SAARC business leaders to continue having exhibitions for the development of the region. Hashim said that the SAARC countries are driven with confidence to achieve common economic goals and therefore all hindrances should be set aside for the economic development of the region. "With SAFTA in progress the benefits of constructive cooperation are so great and the costs of non-cooperation are so high that all of us have to continue working to turn SAARC into a powerful regional grouping," he said. Vice President FPCCI Sheikh Maqbool Ahmed said that to meet the challenges of the WTO, it is essential that SAFTA be implemented as soon as possible. The Trade Liberalisation Program is the most important area of SAFTA and the SCCI has to move cautiously in implementation of this component where there would be a win-win situation. |
