Immigrant expert warns of fraudulent consultants

by Lionel Yodhasinghe

With a promising message to those who seek opportunities of immigration to Canada, a Sri Lankan born immigration consultant domiciled in Toronto is now in town.

President and CEO of Canada Wide Immigration and Settlement Incorporation Nalaka Weerasinghe says that prospective migrants to Canada should gain necessary consultancy services only from those who have registered with the Canadian Migration Authorities to become success.

"It seems that consultancy firms are mushrooming in Sri Lanka. More people would fall prey into the traps of fraudulent operators and lose their life savings and anticipated greener pastures", he said.

Weerasinghe, a past pupil of Dharmaraja College Kandy had worked for several top immigration lawyers in Canada before he started his own consultancy firm to lend helping hand to thousands of Asians in Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Dubai, Maldives, Bangladesh and Middle East. He counts over 12 years experience in immigration counselling and helped over 100 Sri Lankan families to migrate to Canada.

Nalaka insisted that any applicant should be aware of the fraudulent operators who try to take people for a ride and make a fast buck. Therefore, the applicants' responsibility and their right is to enquire from the selected consultant of its registration number and other documents to check the authenticity before handing over their document and consultancy fee.

Under the new rule enacted last April, Canadian Government considers applications forwarded only through the Use of Representative excluding individual applications for processing. It is mandatory for the Use of Representatives or consultants to possess the legal membership of the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC) or Canadian Provincial or Territorial Law Society or the Chamber des notaries du Quebec.

Applications forwarded by non-member consultants are rejected outright. Therefore, ensure to check the authenticity of your consultant, Nalaka warned. Nalaka is a member of CSIC and his authenticity could be checked under his registration Number M041049 on web sites www.come2canada.com and www.csic-scci.ca

Nalaka is the only Sri Lankan consultant who has the membership of CSIC, and he visits Colombo and other offices in Asia frequently to help his clients. He says that he provide post landing services such as assisting the clients find places to stay, schools for children, employment, and other such help free of charge. Apart from formal duties, Nalaka does not forget even to lend a word of soothing to those who down with home sick in Canada.

He advises prospective students to have sufficient money if they want to learn in Canada. However, those who cannot afford can now use the new program initiated by the New Brunswick Province to attract international students. Under this program, after completing studies for one year, students can work for 20 hours a week.

They can continue studies while working and later they will be qualified to employment and permanent resident visas too in Brunswick. He also advises to select good universities and colleges before departure to obtain better education and value for money.

Speaking to Daily News Nalaka said that opportunities are still enormous for correct persons in Canada. With the expansion of its socio-economic vistas, the country requires more immigrants to support her development drive.

Nalaka advises the prospective immigrants to avoid illegal methods, short cuts introduced by fraudulent advertising, which would perish your hope at the end.

"Obtain proper qualifications including English language skill and use the opportunities to work and live happily in Canada", he says.
