Dias - General Secretary of SJKFL

Telesphor Dias, veteran sports promoter was elected General Secretary of the Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte Football League for the second successive year at AGM conducted on March 12 at Welikada police premises, presided by the former President/Mayor of Kotte, M. C. Ranjith Cooray.

Dy. Inspector General, Western Province (South), K. P. P. Pathirana was unanimously elected President for the ensuing year. Telesphor Dias is the only disabled General Secretary out of 47 football leagues to hold this prestigious post.

Better known among his friends as Teles he is a beacon light and leads the youth towards a crime-free, drug-free society passion and dream of every citizen. crime in areas such as Bandaranayakepura, Obeysekerapura, Welikada Moragasmulla all coming under the purview of Kotte electorate decreased due to his success of harnessing the youth into competitive football tournaments conducted in 2003 with the assistance of Disciplinary Committee Chairman, Chief Inspector, R. L. Chandrasiri, OIC, Welikada police.

Teles excelled in football and cricket three decades ago he is a brother of late Carlyle Dias, SSP Police fame and Sylvester Dias former Sri Lanka fast bowler. Football is his chosen field. In 1970 he inaugurated Welikada Youth SC with his personal funds organised the first floodlit finals at E. W. Perera playground in Kotte, Rajagiriya in 1975.

In 1976 he organised a football tournament in Kotte played the finals at Sugathadasa Stadium, his club Welikada Youth SC won the then Nugegoda District F.L Championship in 1979.

The same year they won the under-19 Inter-Grama Sevaka Championship.

Teles inaugurated Battaramulla Youth SC initiated the biggest motor sports event at Battaramulla, Polduwa in 2001 with Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee, SLRRA and CMSC to raise funds for the disabled servicemen and the families of soldiers who sacrificed their life in the war against terrorists.

In recognition of his service the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Motor Sports Committee then Brigadier now Maj. General Ivon Dassanayake bestowed Teles with the title of "FATHER OF THE SUPERCROSS 2001". The same year he with Sri Lanka junior National coach formed the "Kaduwela Football Development Foundation" at Buddhadasa Stadium.

The late Mayor of Kotte, Chandra de Silva, MC revived the ailing Nugegoda District Football League renamed it Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte Football League.

Telesphor Dias' son Sujeewa Dias, captained St. Joseph's College rugger team in 1989.

Teles who will be leaving for Dubai soon intends meeting all sportsmen and women there and seek their assistance for Kotte F.L.
