New president vows to rebuild image of SLC

by Sa'adi Thawfeeq

Newly elected president of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Mohan de Silva vowed to restore the credibility and rebuild the image of SLC.

De Silva who was elected uncontested at the 54th AGM of the Cricket Board (now SLC) said that much of the image and credibility of SLC had been lost by bad publicity from certain sections of the media. He also said that finance was another area of concern and that is why they had brought in a competent and experienced person like Nuski Mohamed who was elected treasurer.

Mohamed makes a welcome return to the fold. His wealth of experience and knowledge in cricket administration is almost unmatched. It is something that the present administration can make maximum use of. Mohamed has been within the system of cricket administration for several years being secretary and present president of Saracens SC, a controlling club of SLC.

A chartered accountant by profession he has a proven record as treasurer and then secretary during the Gamini Dissananyake regime in the eighties.

De Silva said a stable administration was important if Sri Lanka was to achieve the goal of becoming the Asian hub of world cricket within the next four years, a vision of immediate past president Thilanga Sumathipala.

De Silva, a former secretary who took over the presidency from Sumathipala said that he would continue to pursue the six-point five-year strategic plan of the former president.

A resolution was unanimously approved by the house yesterday to appoint Sumathipala to handle all international affairs of SLC, which means that he will also represent the country at ICC meetings and continue to be a director of the world controlling body.

De Silva said that he had a wonderful team of people with him and that he was confident of working towards achieving the goals they had set for the future.

One of them was to concentrate the energies on strengthening the national side and setting their sights on the 2007 World Cup.

"The Australian tour has taught us many lessons and we need to strengthen our limited resources to the national side. In this aspect we are now focussedg on expanding the activities of the Cricket Academy," he said.

A new face in the office-bearers is Ravin Wickremaratne who was elected assistant secretary to Lourance Amerasena, the secretary. Wickremaratne, a former Panadura SC cricketer played a key role as co-ordinator of the tour organising committee during the tours here by England and Australia. Amerasena, a former Police SC cricketer is an experienced hand having been involved in cricket administration for several years.

With Michael de Zoysa withdrawing his candidature before the meeting, the two vice presidency posts were uncontested. Former Sri Lanka Test cricketer Aravinda de Silva retained his post while Trevor Rajaratnam, who was assistant treasurer last year was elected vice president replacing A.J.M. Muzzammil.

Lucian Merrinege was elected assistant treasurer. All office-bearer posts were uncontested.
