Peiris said yesterday. Announcing the Cabinet decisions in Colombo, Prof.Peiris said the Cabinet has decided that an environment should be created to hold a free and fair election. The Central Bank had been asked to cost the two manifestos of the UPFA and the work plan of the UNF, Prof. Peiris said. Addressing the weekly Cabinet briefing, Prof. Peiris said they have asked the Central Bank to look at the economic implications of the Freedom Alliance manifestos and the differing approaches each has taken. "At the same time we have asked the Central Bank to investigate the likely revenue sources for their spending plans." According to the provisions of the Constitution (Article 104 C and Article 104 D), Police should carry out only the Elections Commissioner's orders. No other person can give orders to the police, he said. According to the Constitution, the Elections Commissioner can decide whether the police needs the help of armed forces to carry out their duties. All public servants should carry out all orders given by the Elections Commissioner. They cannot take orders from any other person. He commended the Elections Commissioner's move to appoint a Competent Authority for the SLRC and the SLBC. Prof. Peiris said the UNF was facing this election with confidence. |
