Nearly 16,000 of them are Armed Forces personnel in the North. Addressing a press briefing, NEMEC Coordinating Secretary Amarananda Weerasinghe said that although there was speculation that postal voting was extended by the Election Commissioner until April 2, there is no clear official announcement with regard to this extension. "Therefore the authorities must make a firm announcement regarding the extension in order to pave a large number of public servants who were unable to cast their postal votes on the given dates," he said. Weerasinghe also accused a section of private sector institutions especially several garment sector establishments in Colombo and suburbs for not granting leave for their workers to cast the vote on April 2. "The authorities must take stern action against these institutions and pave the way for these workers to cast their vote," he said. NEMEC, Vice President Dr. Swarnalatha Perera said their organisation has already informed the Election Commissioner about election violence which have been reported from several districts, including from Ratnapura, Badulla and Nuwara-Eliya. NEMEC Treasurer Yasanjali Devika Jayathilaka said that not only the Government media but also some private media institutions behaved in an undemocratic way during this period. |
