His letter stated that this situation has aggravated in the Districts of Ratnapura, Matara, Kurunegala and Badulla and worst in the Kolonne Electorate of the Ratnapura District and that certain police officers seem to be biased in favour of the UNP. The police apparently have not intervened to curb election violence in the Akuressa, Weligama and Dickwella police areas in the Matara District where incidents of election violence were rampant, the letter pointed out. Commenting that this trend was not conducive to the conduct of a free and fair election, Tylvin Silva urged the Elections Commissioner to summon the armed forces if the police were inadequate to maintain law and order. |
