Blaze razes refugee camp

The Punthottam Unit 6 Refugee Camp at Vavuniya was gutted and one person injured when the camp caught fire yesterday afternoon. The injured man was admitted to Vavuniya Hospital.

Vavuniya Air Force personnel together with the Fire Brigade brought the fire under control. Investigations reveal a power leakage suspected to be the cause of the fire.

Investigations are continuing.

Iranian cultural week

In commemoration of the 25th year of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, an Iranian Cultural Week will be held from February 3 to 5 at the Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, Kandy. A group of Iranian Artists comprising painter miniaturist, photographer, Calligrapher etc, are scheduled to visit Sri Lanka and exhibit their works at this exhibition.

This would give the artists, art lovers and students of Art a unique opportunity to see, acquaint, interact and exchange ideas directly with these renowned artists hailing from Iran.

Iran which has introduced numerous renowned artists to the world throughout history will be represented by miniaturist/illuminator Ms. Farzaneh Ghane'i Bonab and photographer Ms. Fatima Ta'amidi and calligrapher/miniaturist Mr. Azimbordi Goki and painter Mr. Morataza Asadi and Inlay work (moarraq) by Mr. Ali Reza Kafeezadeh at this event the aim of which is to introduce some aspects of the rich heritage of Iranian Art to the Sri Lankan art lovers and students. The Exhibition will be kept open for the public from 03rd to 05th of February 2004 (both days inclusive) from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. daily. All are cordially invited, states an Embassy of Iran in its Press release.

Water supply projects in Kandy

Work on water and drainage projects and a water purification scheme in Kandy and its suburbs have already commenced and are scheduled to be competed by 2006, said the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake.

He said the project is being financed by the Government of Japan costing Rs. 48 million. The Minister examined the progress of the initial work of the project - at Gohagoda - through which the needs of Katugastota Sub-town's would be met.

He said water purification unit at Gonagoda is capable of purifying 36,000 cubic units of water, supposing strength of the Kandy water purification scheme.

The Gohagoda-Kadadeniya-Kahalla-Akurana-Bangalawatta-Asigirya and Phihilladeniya areas will also get a better supply of water.

Motorcyclist killed in crash

A man was killed in a bus-motorcycle crash in Kirulapona on Wednesday. The incident took place on the Kirulapona road leading to the Highlevel road around 6 a.m. The victim died on admission to the Colombo National Hospital.

S. Jeyarajan Sashi (25) of Torrington Mawatha, Colombo, an employee of the National Livestock Development Board was delivering milk at the time of the incident.

Chandralatha testifying at the inquest before the City Coroner Edward Ahangama said the father of the bus driver threatened her after that incident.

The City Coroner instructed the police to ensure her security and to produce the driver of the bus, H. M. D. Priyantha Herath before the Court.

The City Coroner postponed the verdict for February 29. Nirosha Sugandi, wife of the victim also gave evidence. AJMO Dr Mrs K. K. Joozar held the post-mortem. Evidence was led by PC Sampath of Kirulapona Police.

Quarry worker meets with tragic death

A thirty-five year old father of two died on the spot when his head struck a stone after the dynamite used to blast the rock accidently exploded.

The victim was identified as Sinnaiya Jeyakumar of Tudugala estate, Neboda.

He was rushed to the Nagoda - Kalutara General hospital but died before admission."The inquirer into Sudden deaths at Kalutara after referring to the medical report of the JMO Kalutara hospital passed a verdict of death due to serious injuries to the chest and stomach.
