Non-participation of youth serious social void - Kesarralal Gunasekera

by Florence Wickramage

Commending the good work done by the Sri Lanka Council for the Blind during the past years, ANCL Chairman Kesarralal Gunasekera said there is a serious void in the Sri Lanka society with the non-participation of youth in social service.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Sri Lanka Council for the Blind as chief guest, he said.

Since 1948, Sri Lanka has been moving backwards rather than forwards due to the present governing system.

"All consecutive governments which ruled the country are responsible for the current situation where values are sadly lacking in the society," he said.

Mr. Gunasekera added that what Sri Lanka needs today is a National Intelligence Board and National Policies in every sector to put the country on the right track.

"Within a system where each one tries to rule the country the way he wants," Mr. Gunasekera said he had absolutely no confidence in a system where a group of 25 to 30 people consecutively meet every Wednesday to take decisions of governance for the entire country.

Among sectors most affected by this system are education, Arts and the handicapped, he said.

Pledging the Institution's media support for the Council as long as he remained Chairman, Mr. Gunasekera observed that there was no place in Sri Lanka today for the handicapped and artistes and State support for these sectors was of utmost importance.
