by Sarath Malalasekera Police are investigating a complaint by Western Provincial Council and UPFA Gampaha District candidate Sanjaya Siriwardena about Minister S. B. Dissanayake where he allegedly stated they would celebrate the Sinhala New Year with Ranil Wickremesinghe, not as the Prime Minister but as the President of the country. Minister Dissanayake made this alleged statement at the UNF special convention at the Town Hall, Colombo last Sunday. Parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 2 and Parliament will be reconvened on April 22. Provincial Councillor Siriwardene has also stated in this complaint that according to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the Presidency doesn't fall vacant unless the tenure ends or the President dies. The President has two more years to hold her position. The only way the post becomes vacant is if the President is murdered or if she dies and hence, the statement of the relevant minister arouses serious suspicions, states a complaint forwarded to the IGP today. Siriwardena in his statement to the Police Headquarters has said, as a close associate of the Bandaranaike family he requests the Police to investigate Dissanayake's speech as there is an alleged threat to the President's life. |
