To meet workforce related demand USAID supports Business Academy in Galle Jeffrey Allen, Director of Economic Growth Programs, Us Agency for International Development (USAID), inaugurated the Galle Business Academy (GBA) yesterday. The Galle Business Academy (GBA) addresses one of Sri Lanka's critical development challenges providing youth with education and training opportunities that match the workforce demands of an increasingly private-sector driven economy. The GBA will provide students with skills and training needed by Sri Lanka's private sector employers. Courses will be provided in business management, chartered accountancy, marketing, banking, English language, and information technology. To certify the equality of instruction, the academy is establishing affiliations with several nationally recognised institutions, including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing, the National Institute of Business Management, the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology and Ruhuna University. USAID and the Galle District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GDCCI) partnered to create the first fully accredited business academy in the Southern Province. USAID has granted nearly US $ 50,000 to the GDCCI to support development of curricular and course material; accreditation charges; and to provide equipment and furniture for lecture rooms, a computer lab and a library. Over 2,000 students will benefit from this joint initiative. At the inauguration, Allen said, "USAID wishes all those involved in the GBA much success in this exciting initiative. We hope that this worthy endeavour will serve as a model to meet the critical demand for workforce of Sri Lanka's modernising economy. |
