Indian economy grows 8.9 percent in third quarter of 2003-04

NEW DELHI, Friday (AFP) Finance Minister Jaswant Singh said India's economy grew 8.9 percent in the third quarter of the financial year to March, driven by strong growth in the agriculture, manufacturing and services sectors.

"The economy grew by 8.9 percent in the third quarter of this year which is a remarkable achievement," Singh told a function to award women entrepreneurs. Growth was 8.4 percent in the second quarter.

Singh added: "The government will try its best to offer all kinds of infrastructure facilities that will push this growth forward."

India's Central Statistical Organisation has said the country's economy was expected to grow 8.1 percent in the current financial year, ending on March 31. The economy posted a growth of 4.0 percent in the previous financial year.

Singh said the three key components of the gross domestic product (GDP) - agriculture, manufacturing and services - had all performed well in the third quarter.
