Four former parliamentarians of the United National Front Government led by former Deputy Highways Minister and leader of the Ashraff faction of the SLMC, A. L. M. Athaullah yesterday signed an agreement with the Freedom Alliance before President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the President's House.

Surveys forecast victory for Freedom Alliance

A countrywide survey conducted by a joint university panel has indicated that the Freedom Alliance would secure a clear victory at the April 2 General Elections. A Reuters survey of financial institutions also revealed that the Freedom Alliance would win the most number of seats.

President directs Treasury Secretary:

Don't use budgetary funds for polls expenditure

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga while strongly objecting to a Cabinet decision taken in her absence to confirm temporary, casual and contractual employees the Personal Staff of Ministers, effective February 1, has directed the Treasury Secretary to halt using budgetary provisions for election expenditure programs.
