The removal of landmines in Kambiliyawa, Konwewa and Veherawewa Colonies in the Welioya area of the Padaviya Divisional Secretariat Division of the Anuradhapura district commenced yesterday. A news release issued by Secretary to the Prime Minister said: "The Halo Trust International Voluntary Institute engaged in removing landmines in the North-East has expressed its willingness and inspection of the relevant locations has already commenced. The office of the Commissioner General of Relief Rehabilitation and Reconciliation will be coordinating these activities. Under this program the access road to Kambiliyawa Colony in extent about one and a half km and the area surrounding it where landmines are likely will be speedily cleared. After demining 300 families originally living in Kambiliyawa, Konwewa and Veherawewa Colonies and are now displaced will be resettled. On the Prime Minister's instructions the office of the Commissioner General of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation in collaboration with the District Secretaries of the four districts adjacent to the North-East (Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Moneragala) will assist families who resettled with a grant of Rs. 25,000. This project is being supported with World Bank assistance." |
