SLARDAR championship at Katukurunda tomorrow by Bernard Perera The first stage of the SLARDAR championship is scheduled for Sunday February 22 at Katukurunda. The meet is scheduled to commence at 8.30 a.m. The race is organised by Sri Lanka Association for Racing Drivers and Riders. This years first of the series has attracted a large number of competitors 87 drivers and 37 riders. The Katukurunda circuit famous for its thrills and spills for the large crowds that present themselves to witness a day full of racing are sure to get the best from 26 events to be worked off on this day. The organisers have made arrangements to hold eight championship event on this day for cars group A (2), group N (2) and group S (2) and group B for motor cycles. 125 cc 2 stroke standard and four stroke open event (according to organisers the competitors are afforded the opportunity of having practices on Saturday Feb 21 from 8.30 a.m. Last years Super Car Champion Aravinda Premadasa who switched onto a Mitsubishi Evo in the latter part of the series will face tough competition from two more Mitsubishis driven by Dan Dissanayake and Dinesh Deheragoda. Others who are looking for honours in this class are Rizvi Farook. In group N cars a keen tussle could to expected with many experienced drivers engaged to go for honours. The leading drivers expected to compete today are Upulwan Serasinghe, Buddhi de Silva, Javid Wahab, Zakee Junaid, Sheran Fernando, Sajeed Zuhair and Dilshad Hamdoon. Rohith de Silva driving a Mini Petco will face the task of overcoming P. Balasingham and Nilanga Dela Bandara in this class. The motor cycles events too could produce the maximum interest for motor racing fans on this day. Riders of the calibre of Damien Gunetilleke, Prabath Peiris, Donald Bultjens along with Maduranga Caldera who won three events at last weekends meet at Pannala are sure to battle it out all the way for supremacy. Formula Ford event will see last years leader Romani de Silva confront a set of top class drivers at the Katukurunda track. The formula driver expected to pose a threat here are veteran Rohan de Silva, Rizvi Farook, Romesh Paul, Sashika Dias and Michael Muthumani. The only lady driver on the track Shehara de Silva too is expected to compete alongside these top drivers. All in all a day filled with thrills and spills can be witnessed. |
