Nine lifters off to Pakistan

A nine-member strong weight lifting team from Young Men's Christian Association, Kandy, left for Lahore, Pakistan to participate in the Invitation Inter Divisional Weight Lifting Championships to be held in there on February 22.

The strong squad comprises seven men and two women lifters and is also the first time two female lifters are participating in a competition abroad.

The team is led by A.M. Sideek who will compete in the 105 kg. plus category and the other lifters are K.K. Asanga (56 kg), N. Hewantha (56 kg.), B.M.P. Bandara (62 kg.), K.G.G. Jayalath (69 kg.), P.K.N. Dayan (77 kg.), R.P.M. Wijeratne (105 kg).

The two women weight lifters Nadi Gunasekera and Dammika Harischandra will compete in the 62 kg. category.

Former National coach and Central Province Sports Director S.A. Wijewickrema Jnr. will accompany the team as Manager with Athula Wijewickrema who is the present National coach as the Coach. Maurice Windus of the Kandy YMCA - a former weight lifter and ruggerite will also accompany the team.
