Chandradasa sets new Sri Lanka record K.A. Chandradasa of Nuwara Eliya District established the solitary Sri Lanka record on the opening day of the Sri Lanka Athletic Trials for the SAF Games begun at Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. Chandradasa erased the long standing Sri Lanka men's 5,000m record held by former Olympian and veteran long distance runner K.A. Karunaratrne. Chandradasa clocked 14 minutes, 08.50 seconds to win the men's 5,000m yesterday while Anuradha. Cooray finished second returning a timing of 14:13.60. Chandradasa is coached by Norbert Perera. Both Chandradasa and Cooray bettered Karunaratne's Sri Lanka mark. Today is the final of the two-day trial, conducted by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka, to pick the Sri Lanka athletic team for the 9th SAF Games to be worked off in Islamabad, Pakistan from March 29 to April 7.
