All Island Clergy Organisation states:

Improper for monks to contest elections

The All Island Clergy Organisation has pointed out that seeking nominations to contest elections to enter a progressive path was improper for prelates according to the Buddha's doctrine.

A letter sent to Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka by the General Secretary of the All Island Clergy Organisation, Ven. Watanapaha Somananda states that the Jathika Hela Urumaya should not be a party to devide the progressive forces opposed to the corrupt United National Front government.

The organisation had warned that if the Hela Urumaya contributed towards deviding the progressive forces, the UNF will be able to form another government.

"It will also help the LTTE to divide this country," the letter noted.

The organisation has urged the Hela Urumaya to think twice before it enters the election fray.
