SLPA net profit increases by 34% to Rs. 3.7 billion The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) recorded a net profit of 34% during 2003. The Ports in Colombo , Galle. Trincomalee, Kankesanturai and Point Pedro under the Sri Lanka Ports Authority netted Rs. 16.4 billion during the year 2003. Port sources said that this achievement is the highest annual profit during a given year in the Port's history. Revenue earned during 2002 was Rs. 15.7 billion and the net profit was Rs. 2.8 billion . The net profit during 2003 before the voluntary retirement scheme was Rs. 3.7 billion. The surge in volumes achieved by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority is attributed to aggressive approach and higher performance over the past two years as measures adopted on instructions of Minister of Port Development and Shipping Rauff Hakeem, said Dr. Parakrama Dissanayaka, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority. The progress achieved by Jaya Container Terminal, increasing the welfare measures, voluntary retirement scheme which involved 4,000 port workers, deepening the access channel to Colombo Port and Jaya Container Terminal water area and opening the North and South access channels were performed during 2003. The throughput of cargo during 2002 was 26,272,591 metric tonnes against that handled during 2003 reflecting 2,819,636 an increase of 7.3%. Rs. 3,140 million was paid as compensation for the 4,000 Port employees who opted to retire voluntarily and as a result the port coffers saved Rs. 1,000 million per year which was paid as salaries. |
