by Chris Dhambarage

The touring West Indies under 19 team took an unbeatable 2 - 1 lead in the four match one day series with an exciting five wicket win over the Sri Lanka under 19 team in the third one day match played at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.

After restricting the home side for 217 for 8 the West Indies under 19 team successfully reached their target for the loss of five wickets and with one ball to spare.

Opener Xavier Marshall led their run chase with a top score of 86 from 91 deliveries. He played the anchor role with a solid batting performance stroking ten fours and four sixes.

Assad Fudaddin also made a fluent 44 with six fours and together with Lendl Simmons they guided the visitors to a thrilling victory at the end.

Earlier the Sri Lanka under 19 team recovered from an early setback to reach a respectable 217 for 8 from their 50 overs. The home side collapsed to 43 for 4 at one stage having elected to bat first and were in danger of being bowled out for under 150 runs.

Skipper Farveez Maharoof and his deputy Ganganath Ratnayake figured in a crucial fifth wicket stand of 58 runs and took the score pass the one hundred run mark. Maharoof struck four bounadries during his knock of 33 while Ratnayake playing his first game in the series made 26.

Kosala Kulasekera and Gihan de Silva then continued with the good work adding a further 65 for the seventh wicket. In fact all rounedr Kulasekera was the top scorer with a hard hit 43 off just 47 balls which included two sixes and four boundaries.

Gihan de Silva provided excellent support with a useful 32 off 47 balls with one six. Suraj Mohamed then added the finishing touches with quick fire 25 from only 18 deliveries with the aid of three boundaries.

Opening bowler Barrington Earwood did the early damage capturing the first four wickets to finish with the splendid figures of 4 for 35. The fourth and final one day match will be played at the same venue on Friday.
