President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in her address to the Nation yesterday to mark Sri Lanka's 56th Independence Day, reiterated her deep commitment to peace and called upon all political parties to join hands to resolve the national problems.

Quiet dignity marks 56th Independence Day

A quiet and dignified ceremony yesterday at Independent Square, Colombo marked Sri Lanka's 56th Independence Day. Lion flags fluttered in the morning breeze as President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga flanked by the Commanders of Army, Navy and Air Force hoisted the national flag amidst drum beats of magulbera and the blowing of conch shells.

Alick Aluvihare tenders resignation as UNP district chairman

Home Affairs, Provincial Council and Local Government Minister Alick Aluvihare has tendered his resignation from the post of UNP District Chairman Matale claiming that his own party men were destroying the clean image he maintained during his 50 years in politics, sources told the Daily News.
