Alick Aluvihare tenders resignation as UNP district chairman by Anura Maitipe Home Affairs, Provincial Council and Local Government Minister Alick Aluvihare has tendered his resignation from the post of UNP District Chairman Matale claiming that his own party men were destroying the clean image he maintained during his 50 years in politics, sources told the Daily News. They said that dissension was created during the UNP Matale district Balamandalaya sessions at the Matale Town Hall, when Pradeshiya Sabha member U.B. Elhena addressing the session hit out that the UNP was not the personal property of one family but belonged to the common people. "The UNP cannot be restricted to a few families," the member said. "It is regretful that when party voters visit the district leader, they are driven away using foul langauge. This has resulted in the grass roots level UNP leaders having to face the supporters' wrath," sources said. In reply, Aluvihare spoke forcefully and the meeting was thrown into chaos. However at this stage, MP Sanjeewa Kaviratne moved a motion to invalidate the session seconded by the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Aluvihare told the press that the Minister decided to resign because he was depressed that his unblemished 50-year political career was being tarnished, by persons with vested interests who wanted to oust the old guard. The cold war between two factions for the District leadership had thrown the party machinery in Matale into disarray with the rival factions already forming into camps. The 'informants' are allegedly led by a senior parliamentarian eyeing the district leadership at the forthcoming elections, the sources added. |
