Amnesty for 2,000 prisoners

In commemoration of the 56th Independence Day, approximately 2,000 prisoners were pardoned by President Chandrika Bandaranai ke Kumaratunga.

Interior Ministry Secretary M. N. Junaid recommended three categories of prisoners for amnesty in commemoration of the Independence Day yesterday.

Accordingly, prisoners serving their sentences by February 4, 2004 received an amnesty of one week for each year of imprisonment while those to be released by May 4 were allowed to be freed on February 4. Prisoners in jail in default of fines also benefitted from this amnesty.

The President had informed Junaid that the Amnesty did not apply to those sentenced for unlawful assembly, bribery, house breaking, thefts, treason, abduction, cruelty to children, narcotic offenses and rape.

The Welikada Prison released over 700 prisoners.
