Exclusive screening of 'Suriya Arana'

by Anjana Gamage

International award winning film director Somaratne Dissanayake's latest production "Suriya Arana" which has drawn criticism in local Buddhist circles will be screened to an exclusive audience of leading Buddhist monks in the country on January 20th Daily News learns.

The chief incumbents of the three chapters- Malwatte, Asgiri and Amarapura along with the prominent Buddhist monks including Ven. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera, Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera, Ven. Uduwe Dammaloka Thera and Ven. Kollonnawe Sri Sumangala Thera and several other Buddhist monks have been invited by the producer of the film Renuka Balasooriya for this special screening.

"We are 100 percent confident about our film. We can assure that the film does not contain anything detrimental to Buddhism.

But it is saddening that some misguided people and organisations who have been only seen a trailer of the film are causing this chaos, Renuka Balasooriya told the " Daily News".

"Suriya Arana" is a film based on environmental issues and animals. The film depicts how goodness can change the lives of people with deviant behaviour patterns, she further added. However, she alleged that after screening the film to the Buddhist monks on January 20, the film would be released for public screening from January 23.

Meanwhile, the Censor Board will also watch the movie on the same day(20th) the screening for the monks will be at a different location.

The director Somaratne Dissanayake is due to arrive from India today, after completing post production work of the film at the Prasad Lab in India.

According to the producer "Suriya Arana" has cost Rs. 1.2 million to produce not including publicity expenditure.
